This movie was about a Cuban writer, Reinaldo Arenas who was also a homosexual, during the time of the revolution. They did not accept anyone different than them or against the “cause”. He had to do his writing in secret and find people to smuggle his work out so that it could be published. This movie was sad to me. He was never able to just be himself. He had to hide everything, from his writing to his sexuality.
Arenas was finally able to get free from his country that would not allow him to write and move to the United States. He was free to write but fell victim to the AIDS virus. Despite all of the odds against him he was still able to write amazing work. It always seems our situations we go through in our life fuel our work. This makes for great writing when passion and belief are behind.

Cultural Opp #2 Shakespeare in Love
Shakespeare in Love was a movie I normally would not rent or buy. It is set back in the times of sword fighting and when chivalry of men was present. It started off kind of slow with men arguing about money and a man being tortured, not something normally of my interest. Once Shakespeare is entered into the movie it becomes a little more interesting, only because of the poetic way he speaks. Most women go gaga over romantic men and a love story.
Once the movie went on more it was interesting to see how Shakespeare was portrayed as a man of little power. Today he is a legend and his writings and plays are taught in every English class. He is known by all as an extraordinary play writer and poet. It was also neat to see how while writing Romeo and Juliet he was going through the same thing in his real life with a love. Life experiences are what prompt the poetry, plays or music. I think that’s what makes it so great; the writer’s or musician’s heart is in it which shows through the work.
As mentioned this movie was not something I normally would have rented but I am glad I did. I enjoyed seeing Shakespeare in his era creating one of his most well known pieces, Romeo and Juliet. In the future I will take these types of movies into consideration when wanting to watch something new. Watching the life of a legendary writer brings him to life for me and I am better able to understand him.

Cultural Opp #1 Art Exhibit
For my first Cultural opportunity I visited the Art Gallery at ICC. When I walked into the Gallery, I am surrounded by splashes of color with some black on white canvas. There were probably 16 different pieces of artwork throughout. As I looked at each piece it seemed to be abstract type artwork. In majority of the paintings there was a main focus that was in color and then in the background where other images that were in black.
For example there was a painting that was called shoes. In this painting there were a pair of shoes that were painted blue on the bottom of the page. At the top a city is drawn in black ink, other images appeared in the center as if to separate the shoes from the city. On all the paintings the titles were backwards inside blocks, reminded me of the blocks that children play with.
At first I didn’t really get the meaning of the paintings, well at least what the Artist intended. After reading the Artist’s statement it made sense what he was trying to show in his artwork. He had about 20 flash cards of first words that were his sons. It was like he took his sons perception on the words and drew them abstractly. Most young children don’t think clearly and are all over the place so he did an awesome job of bringing to life the “first words” of children.

Letter to Stephanie
Dear Stephanie,
Well I thought since the first blog we put out on our page was a “letter to Stephanie” I thought very fitting to end with one. Except this time It won’t be me telling you about myself as hopefully over the last few months you have gotten to know me some. I can not believe the semester is coming to an end, and it is even crazier to believe all the work we have done. When I realized our last assignment was right around the corner I was in disbelief. As you know this class has been very challenging for me having a little one at home. I think to myself if I did not have a child to take care of I probably would have done A LOT better on my papers. I did not put all the time needed into my work as it shows through my writing.
I also wanted to mention how much I have enjoyed being in your class………..I’m not trying to be a brown noser. I just know from being an underappreciated mother and wife I like to let others know how much I appreciate the things they do for me. Your class was definitely not easy by any means but I believe you are very fair in the things you do. I would like to take you in the future but fortunately I do not need any more English for my degree, yes I said fortunately ha ha……….As I have mentioned through my writings I don’t care for writing, but if you were to teach something else I’d be there J.
I hope to see you around ICC in the future when I return after my daughter starts school in three years. I know to some it may seem weird that I am thanking you for “doing” your job, but I know a lot of teachers who do not do anything for students after school hours. You have been there whenever we needed you even when you are at home. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Colleen E. Mathias

Slow Down!!!
Parking lot drivers, it seems people lose all sense of how to drive when they enter a parking lot. It does not matter where I go, people either drive way too fast for a parking lot or fail to yield to pedestrians. I especially notice this at Wal-Mart and the ICC parking lots.
I don’t know how many times I have walked within a crosswalk and drivers disregard the signs that say “it’s the law, yield to pedestrians within a crosswalk.” We are not in Europe; those signs are put there for a reason.
Or for people that fly out of their parking space, slow down!! I drive slowly when pulling out of my parking space and I am glad I do. One day when leaving Wal-Mart I was about to pull out but took my time, thank goodness, because a little boy dropped something in front of my car and bent over to pick it up. Since I was taking my time I thankfully did not hit him.
For the safety of people, please take your time when you are driving. It would be horrible to have known you killed someone because you were in a rush. Slow Down!!

My writing blog10
The ad analysis, this was probably the hardest paper for me so far. Probably because it makes you think critically, yeah I know that probably sounds lame. I am not saying I expect things to be easy, this was just a really hard paper. I think I choose a good ad, one that is very appealing to the eye. It is a busy ad and has fun imagery, from a man on stilts to a life size bottle of perfume.
After doing this paper I know for a fact I will never look at ads the same. I am going to pick them all apart and try to figure out how they are trying to draw in their reader’s. Hopefully this prepares me for our up-coming paper, the cultural analysis.
Writing is very challenging and I feel I am growing as I go. My sensory details are getting better and instead of just slopping stuff on paper, I try to think of how to describe things really well; I try and draw a picture for the reader in words. I do not always succeed but I am more aware of it as I write.
I definitely would not want to be a writer for a living or even an English teacher. I still feel like my writing is not like some I have seen by others that is almost poetic in a way. I wish I could write like that but I would really struggle trying to do so.

To spank or Not to spank?
Is it alright to spank your children? I have been going back and forth with whether or not I think my daughter should be spanked. In the beginning I was totally against it only because of the influence of an outside party. At times I find it hard to spank my daughter in public. I am afraid someone will call the cops on me for child abuse. Now and days it seems the whole spanking issue has gotten way out of hand. I in no way condone child abuse but there is a difference between disciplining your children and abusing them.
I think children need a spanking every now and again. I look at all the kids today and they have no respect. They walk all over their parents and threaten to call the cops if they even touch them. They need to realize the parents are in charge and they are the child and as much as they think they know “everything” their parents have been around the block a few times and actually know what’s best for them.
I am now realizing spanking is just fine as long you do it appropriately. You should never spank out of anger, come back to the punishment after you have cooled down. Spank for the more serious punishments, do not just spank for every little thing they do. Such as running into the road, or hurting an animal; things that can be harmful to themselves or others. I do not think spanking should be your only form of punishment. Another method should be used to go along with the spanking. All in all if used properly I think spanking is good and can help in disciplining children.

Blog Week 8
We are halfway through our semester; it is so hard to believe. I have grown some as a writer but still have some issues to work on. Every time I write a paper I always have “muscle” issues. I really need to look into help so that I may better that aspect of my papers.
I am actually feeling pretty good about my writing’s so far. I thought I was much worse at writing than I have shown to be. I really think it does help that Stephanie breaks things down. The way she has assignments that lead to our first draft, and then we can work on our paper some more verses just saying here is the topic, write your paper.
My imagery writing is definitely getting better as show in this sentence used in my Travel Essay: “The pure scenery is like a canvas which is re-painted as the seasons change.” I really have to think “outside” of the box to write good imagery. It is really hard but in the end when you have a beautiful piece of writing it makes it all worth the effort.
I need to spend more time writing on my papers. I have home issues that make it hard to find time to sit and write. If I had more time to work on my paper or even go to the studio this would help me out tremendously. All in all I feel I have done pretty well but having the time and help will be a great benefit to my writing.

Guns
An Illinois law has been passed that allows a hand gun to be carried in the console of a car. This came about from a case that had gone to Supreme Court, because of a man who was arrested for having his gun in the console of his car. He fought it stating that the console could be considered a case. There are stipulations to the law, you obviously have to have your FOID card and the gun can not be loaded.
I agree with being able to have a gun in the console, with all of the crime now and days having a gun close by for protection is nice. The State’s Attorney disagreed with this because he says now Police Officers have to worry about gun’s being at the fingertips of anyone they pull over. This does scare me a little being my Husband is a Police Officer but whether or not a law states you can have a gun in the console or not people will still have them where ever they please.
Crime needs to be stopped and I do not believe taking guns away from people is going to help. The “bad” people will have guns irregardless and then the “good” people are left unable to defend themselves.

Week 6
We are in week six of our writing class so far. I can not believe it!! Time sure flies. Now that we have done a few writings I am learning how to re-word certain things, like not to have the “be” verbs and to do more showing than telling. For instance here is a paragraph from my Autoethnography, “Sure you think it sounds easy right? Just give her a few toys and be on your way. Not in my house, my daughter loves to be chased, “Chase you mommy, Chase you mommy,” she says. Half out of breath I try to chase her around the house. As we continue to run my breath is unable to be caught due to lack of exercise and she is like Speedy Gonzalez and all you see is the smoke behind her as she runs. Once I catch her she giggles uncontrollably and as the giggles fade she runs out of my arms like a tornado only to begin the “chase” again.”
I don’t ever remember really “thinking” about what I wrote when I was in High School. Now when I write I try to put a lot of thought into it. I don’t know if it’s because I have matured since being in High School almost ten years ago and care more about what I do than “just” getting it done. When I was in High School I probably would have blown off the whole revision opportunity we are given and just turned my paper in as is. I really think we do learn more being able to revise our papers than turning them in once and the grade you get is what sticks.
It is very hard and frustrating to do the writings we do but it has definitely made me think of how I write everyday things from e-mails or even journal entries. I am definitely more excited about my writing’s today than I was back in High School.

Divorce
Divorce; is this something we should take lightly? In today’s society it seems people divorce left and right, or maybe people marry too fast. In my eyes you vow to God to be with your spouse “through good times, bad times, in sickness and in health”. As long as there is no abuse I believe things should be worked out. Marriage is very hard and you can not call it quits as soon as things are not going the greatest, especially when children are involved.
You have two people living in one house and sharing everything, there are bound to be fights. It some what reminds me of living with siblings except obviously minus the romantic involvement. You are in such a closed environment and around each other a lot that disagreements are going to happen.
God intended for one man and one woman to spend the rest of their lives together. You become one and what happens to the Husband happens to the Wife. You work as a team and not against each other. Even if it means you need to go to counseling. Just because the relationship has gotten to the point of needing counseling does not mean it is the end. There is nothing wrong with having an outsider help to resolve issues you may have.
We need to be sure to respect our spouses and treat them with kindness. The world seems to be set on high speed and we are always going going going and we do not take time to appreciate our husbands or wives. I am not saying everyone is like this but it seems a good majority go through this. Divorce rates make that apparent.

Writing Blog
Now that I have worked on a few assignments I am realizing how hard it is to write. Well I have always had a hard time writing but it been a long time since I have been “forced” to write something. One assignment I have in mind is the Autoethnography. I have done all the prep work that has led to my first draft, but even when I think I am done I can never seem to get the finished product the way I want. I have re-written my paper several times which I know you are supposed to do but I still do not seem happy with what I have done. Maybe I am being too hard on myself, I am not sure.
I had fun doing the Collage but the Autoethnography has been really stressful. I am really anxious to get feed back from my first draft. I would like to know if I am going in the right direction. I have read over the “instructions” several times to make sure I am doing as I should. I have read some of the examples on previous Autoethnography’s but then I get more confused as to if I have done the right thing. I guess in some sense there is no wrong or right when it comes to writing.

Blog Week 3 "The Hangover"
It has been probably a year since I have been to a movie. Just the other day my husband said he wanted to go see a movie. I said ok lets go. Now anytime we go see a movie we ultimately choose the one he wants to see. He wanted to go see “The Hangover” and I really wanted to see “The Time Traveler’s Wife”. Well for arguments sake we went to see “The Hangover”. At first I thought this was going to be the dumbest movie ever; a bunch of guys after a night of drunkenness, who cares?
This movie had us out loud laughing during the whole movie. Who ever wrote the script for this movie did a really good job with the humor. The character’s chosen I think helped with the humor as well. The group of friends in this movie were an odd match. They had a dorky dentist, a rebellious teacher, one with no job and very odd, and then the last guy was the one with his head on his shoulders.
Four friends travel to Vegas for a bachelor party and end up getting so wasted they do not even remember the night before. Once they wake up they realize they have lost the groom. As they are trying to figure out where their friend is they find out all the crazy stuff they did the night before.
The odd guy through out most of the movie always seemed to end up with no pants on. One scene that was really funny is when they have valet get their car. The valet pulls up with a cop car and says “here is your car officers”. The rebellious teacher looks at the other two and says “stay cool, don’t say a word and just get in the car”. That was just the beginning of what their night was all about. Another funny scene was when they hear someone banging on the trunk and they think it is their friend and they rush to open it and a naked Chinese man jumps out. My husband described it as a monkey jumping on someone. He just jumped out on to one of the guy’s heads and just hits him.
Well with out giving away too much of the movie I think I will end the blog here. This movie is definitely worth the money to go see or rent. They say laughter is the best thing for you so if you are down and out go see this movie and you will be rolling out laughing for an hour and a half.

Case Study: Me as a writer
Writing experiences for me is a blur. I can not really remember a time that I actually wrote a piece of intellectual writing. The last job I had did not require writing. I did accounting so I dealt with numbers all day. The most writing that I do is in the form of a list, text, facebook, etc.
When I write a text for example I shorten words, I do not put in any punctuation. As for a list it just looks like chicken scratch on a piece of paper. Facebook is a little similar to a text but lately I have become more aware of the writings I do on that site. I see others writings and they actually write the way you are supposed to. They have several paragraphs, punctuation, and capitalization as needed. I am terrible when it comes to capitalization and my writings are always one long paragraph. I never separate each topic.
When it comes to school writings I always do them by the book so to speak. I follow all guidelines, use punctuation, etc. I guess I take more pride in these writings because I know I am being graded on them. I am now realizing that I need to take pride in all my writings because it is a reflection of me and the type of person I am.
I am really anxious to start more writings in this class so that I may see how I progress. As I’ve mentioned earlier my writings from the past are a blur, so I want to see how this class has shaped me into a writer. I’ve never thought of myself as a writer and I hope this class helps me write to my potential.

Open for Discussion (texting while driving)
Cell phones they seem like a convenient piece of technology that we can not live without right? Well that is how I feel at times, but with this new texting craze while driving is getting out of control and could actually kill people. Driving while texting, I can not say I have never done it because I have but it is probably one of the most dangerous things you could do while driving.
Several legislative members are trying to pass a bill to make it against the law to text while driving. I do not know how many times I have seen people holding the wheel with their phone in their hand looking at it and then trying to pay attention to the road at the same time. Accidents usually happen in a split second and you need that time to figure out how to react to the situation. If you are looking at the phone it gives you no time to try and avoid a collision or even hit a pedestrian.
I know some states have banned talking on phones while driving but texting according to studies is much more dangerous than talking on the phone. While talking on the phone you are at least able to look at the road all though your attention still is not fully on driving. With texting your full attention is on your phone screen because you need to look at your phone while texting. If they can ban talking because of being dangerous I sure hope they ban texting while driving.

Dear Ms. Scott:
I am writing this letter to provide you with a clear knowledge of my background. I will talk about my family, education I have obtained, where I am from and the career path I have chosen to take.
To begin, I was born on February 23, 1982 in Newton, New Jersey. I have one sister and one brother. My parents moved us from New Jersey to North Carolina when I was ten years old. That is where I consider home because I have most of my memories there. I lived near the beach and really miss it at times. After graduating high school I went to Spain to model for two months. Upon my return from Spain I flew into John F. Kennedy airport almost exactly two month before September 11, 2001. The modeling did not work out so I decided to start college. I went to the local community college in my hometown. While there I studied Paralegal Technology but due to lack of money I dropped out after a year and a half.
After college I had various jobs that ranged from working in an Attorneys office to re-drawing artwork in publications for the H-46 helicopter. We lived near several airbases, Cherry Point being the closest one. This is where I met my Husband. We Married a year later and soon after moved to Illinois. My husband was born in Illinois and wanted to come back to go to school. A year before my husband graduated we had our first child. Addison Jade, she is now two and such a smart and fun little girl. Once my husband was finished with college he obtained a job at The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy.
I worked at Pekin Insurance for almost four years and realized that it was not the type of job for me. I decided to quit and go back to school. This summer was my first semester back. I am majoring in The Physical Therapist Assistant program. One of my goals this semester is to get A’s in all my classes to help boost my numbers for acceptance in my program. I am also working towards volunteer hours at a local hospital. These are my two main focuses for this semester.
I hope you have enjoyed my letter and I am excited to start my first full semester back to college.
Sincerely,
Colleen E. Mathias
