Open for Discussion (texting while driving)

Cell phones they seem like a convenient piece of technology that we can not live without right? Well that is how I feel at times, but with this new texting craze while driving is getting out of control and could actually kill people. Driving while texting, I can not say I have never done it because I have but it is probably one of the most dangerous things you could do while driving.

Several legislative members are trying to pass a bill to make it against the law to text while driving. I do not know how many times I have seen people holding the wheel with their phone in their hand looking at it and then trying to pay attention to the road at the same time. Accidents usually happen in a split second and you need that time to figure out how to react to the situation. If you are looking at the phone it gives you no time to try and avoid a collision or even hit a pedestrian.

I know some states have banned talking on phones while driving but texting according to studies is much more dangerous than talking on the phone. While talking on the phone you are at least able to look at the road all though your attention still is not fully on driving. With texting your full attention is on your phone screen because you need to look at your phone while texting. If they can ban talking because of being dangerous I sure hope they ban texting while driving.

  1. Dont lie colleen.you text while you drive. texting while driving is just as distracting as having two or three friends in the car. band texting from the car means you should band anyone from being in the car besides the driver. most people now adays can text without looking anyway. although it is a distraction, there are many other things that would have to be banned as well. for instince gps systems which many people try and operate while driving.

  2. This makes so much sense and I really agree with what you have said. For me personally, I drive one handed because that is most comfortable. Therefore, I have a free hand to talk when I need to. To me, talking on the phone is no different that singing along with the radio. However, texting is indeed another story and I think that people just need to use their heads and not try to do that while driving. I know that I have done that a few times and it makes me so nervous because I don't want to get in an accident. I'm not sure about banning it because you know people will still do it but I think that common sense should come in when dealing with this issue and trying to keep the roads safe.

  3. I agree with this 100%. There is no way a person can pay attention to texting and driving at the same time. But i do no believe a new law is the only thing we need to keep this from happening. Alot of people will keep doing it just like no texting in highschool.

  4. Contrary to everyone else, I totally disagree. I dont even look at my phone when im texting. Sure, I have to look at the phone to read the messages but it's in the form of a quick glance. Not much different from messing with the radio, putting in a cd, or grabbing change for a toll. I do see your points though and value your opinion. Your blog was very well thought out.

  5. I agree with you because alot of my friends text and drive. They do not pay attention because when i am riding in there car i have to tell them when its a red light or when the person in front is stepping on there brakes. I have text while i drive but i have stop once i saw my friend almost hit a car. So they shoul ban texting while you drive.

  6. I would have to disagree with this one. I don't think they should ban texting while driving but i do believe that people who get in wrecks due to texting should recieve more harsh consequences. Personally i text when i drive all the time but i also can text without looking like most other individuals now days. so the only time i take my eyes off of the road is when i read a text, but i do it so quickly its like im just changing the radio or something. I honestly dont thin a ban would do any good. People are still gonna text and drive no matter what you try and beat into there heads.

  7. I too agree like most people commenting on thins and ironicly enough thats what my blog is about too. If you read my blog you will find that I have been a victem to texting while driving. This action is highly dangerous and should not be allowed to be done while driveing a vehicle. When it comes to people using gps' while driving yes it is just as dangerous but it was made to be used while driveing. I can't sit here and defend it completely cause it does make a distraction. Gps'should be controled by a pasenger if one is available otherwise used more carfully when driving. A large part of the problem is some people in general. these people who allow themselves to get distracted by the phone call or the text they just receved or something else. Overall I think that driving isn't taken as seriously as it should be.

  8. I'm really sorry to hear about your dad. And I know you probably have heard this many times, but it really does get better.

I must say that I am guiltry of texting behind the wheel a few times but I've realized that it's not even worth it. I've heard one too many horror stories about the dangers of it. And even though I can text without looking at the phone, my mind is still not fully engaged in my driving. I think Illinois should pass the law against texting. The sooner we take action, the more we can prevent tragedy.

  9. Colleen, I think this is a very important topic. The few times I've texted, I have been shocked at how completely distracted it is...same way with jacking around with my iPod while driving. I have Bluetooth, which helps, but even when I look down to enter in my password to get my phone messages, my focus is off the road.
